Man on 'violent crime spree' found guilty in Oakland teen's murder
OAKLAND, Calif. - A guilty verdict in a first-degree murder case was found against a Union City man after his six-week-long ‘violent crime spree’ ended in the death of an Oakland teenager, according to officials.
Jacobi Gaines was found guilty of murdering 17-year-old Hassan Humphries on Jan. 13, 2020, in the 1400 block of 48th Avenue at 4:44 p.m.
According to officials, the 23-year-old was a convicted felon when he shot and killed Humphries.
He was also convicted on enhancements for using a firearm, using a deadly weapon, causing great bodily injury, and being a felon on probation at the time these crimes were committed.
The backstory:
Officials said the crime spree started on or around Dec. 2, 2019, mostly with carjackings, robberies, thefts, before it escalated into Humphries' murder.
"This verdict removes a dangerous person from our community," Royl Roberts, chief assistant district attorney said about the case.
Gaines was 18 at the time of the murder.

What they're saying:
Evidence tying Gaines to the scene included his cell phone placing him at the time Humphries was shot.
Additionally, an Audi A4 Quattro car with a custom black grille that was stolen by Gaines days before the murder was also spotted leaving the scene.
Other evidence pointing towards motive included a video of Gaines urinating on the grave of one of Humphries' friends that was posted on social media.
He's facing 25 years four months plus 38 years to life in prison when he's sentenced on Feb. 20.
