The group wants the practice to stop, and it also wants state and county officials to do a better job making sure proper safety procedures are followed at the factory in Fremont, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

When Elon Musk reopened the Fremont plant against Alameda County orders in May he told employees they would not be penalized if they stayed home. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents that it's investigating failures in the 2012 through 2015 Tesla Model S.

Tesla restarted production against orders from county officials and employees tested positive for COVID-19 days later.

After a lot of back-and-forth, it appears county health officials have given Tesla the green light to re-open.

Musk has not commented on claims made by the protesters.

Tesla has picked Austin, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, as finalists for its new U.S. assembly plant, a person briefed on the matter said Friday.

The Alameda County Public Health Department announced on Twitter late Tuesday that the Fremont plant will be able to go beyond basic operations this week and start making vehicles Monday — as long as it delivers on worker safety precautions that it agreed to.

Alameda County characterized their talks with the automaker as "productive".

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed in a tweet Monday that he's reopening the company's car factory in Fremont in violation of Alameda County's shelter-in-place order. 

Manufacturing companies like Tesla may be able to legally reopen next week, Gov. Newsom said.

The Tesla factory in Fremont was busy Monday, despite the shelter-in-place order forbidding most work at the plant.

After talking to his mentor, the East Bay entrepreneur knew there was a demand for personal protective equipment and wanted to do something about it.

In a series of tweets Saturday morning, Musk announced he would move the company's headquarters and flagship Fremont factory, as well as future programs to Texas and Nevada - out of California.

KTVU learned on Wednesday that thousands of employees were told to continue showing up to work despite a shelter in place order that began at midnight Tuesday.
