A tsunami warning and advisory issued for parts of Alaska after a large earthquake struck off the coast of the peninsula was lifted early Thursday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the temblor struck near San Lorenzo around 6:29 p.m. The earthquake was first reported as a magnitude 4.2 but downgraded to a 3.9.

Shake Alert is the West Coast's young, but working, earthquake warning system. On Thursday, it frightened some Bay Area residents when it sent alerts to their cell phones to brace for a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. KTVU's Tom Vacar reports.

Cluster of earthquakes jolt Truckee area; strongest a 4.7-magnitude shaker

The first was a 3.2-magnitude earthquake that struck around 9:26 p.m. It was centered roughly 11 miles from the town. Then at 9:35 p.m., a 4.7-magnitude quake jolted the area, followed by a 3.1-magnitude two minutes later.
