Calmer winds aid California firefighters but hot Labor Day weekend looms

There is some optimism and progress as winds eased on the fire’s western flank while in the northeast, despite gusty ridgetop winds, firefighters with bulldozers and shovels were steadily hacking out fire lines or burning away vegetation to box in the flames before they reached Tahoe.

Brush fire in Lucas Valley mostly contained

Forward progress has been stopped at a brush fire in Marin County on Wednesday. The Lassen Fire prompted authorities to order evacuations in Lucas Valley. Those orders have since been lifted.

Brush fire breaks out on East Bay island

A brush fire broke out Monday morning on Bradford Island in Contra Costa County's San Joaquin Delta. About 20 people live on the island that's about nine miles northeast of Antioch.

Smoke and ash from massive wildfires in the American West have clouded the sky and led to air quality alerts on parts of the East Coast. The effects of the blazes were felt 2,500 miles away as haze hung over New York City, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
