SAN FRANCISCO - State Sen. Scott Wiener and Supervisor Connie Chan appear headed to a November runoff election to replace House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi in a Congress seat representing San Francisco.
Wiener, Chan
Wiener, D-San Francisco, had 41.3% of the vote in the race for the District 11 seat and Chan, a Democrat representing the Richmond District and other neighborhoods on the western side of the city, had 28.6%, according to the latest results from the California Secretary of State's website. Tech entrepreneur and former senior congressional aide Saikat Chakrabarti was in third place at 14.9%.
The next tally of votes, however, won't be public until 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Pelosi announced last November that she would retire after serving in Congress for nearly 40 years and last month endorsed Chan in the race to succeed her. Pelosi first joined Congress in 1987 and was the first woman elected by her peers to be speaker of the House of Representatives, a role she served from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
Wiener served on the Board of Supervisors himself prior to being elected to the state Senate in 2016.
"Tonight the people of San Francisco sent a clear message," Wiener said Tuesday night. "The message has been received. San Franciscans are ready for bold leadership.. for real results.. and a new generation of leaders ready to take on the hardest issues facing our country."
Chan also spoke on Tuesday, telling KTVU that she was proud of her "grassroots campaigning" and the fact that she was able to mobilize hundreds of volunteers, pointing to teachers, nurses and firefighters who endorsed her.
Meanwhile, there were other June 2 election votes throughout the state, including dozens of local and statewide elections, including the highly anticipated race for governor, congressional districts across the state and Alameda County district attorney.
The June 2 primary election will set the stage for November, narrowing the field of candidates for California governor to the top two contenders.
In the Bay Area, South Bay voters will decide who will represent District 14, the region formerly represented by Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned and dropped out of the gubernatorial race after multiple allegations of sexual assault.
San Francisco voters will cast ballots in the District 11 congressional race, which will decide who will replace storied Rep. Nancy Pelosi.
In the East Bay, Alameda County voters will choose the next district attorney, who will serve as the county’s top prosecutor.
KTVU FOX 2 will be tracking live primary election results as soon as the polls close at 8 p.m. Check back here to see live results as ballots are counted Tuesday night.
