Yearly totals
Friday’s crash marked San Jose’s eighth pedestrian death of 2026 and 17th traffic fatality of the year. At this time last year, San Jose had recorded nine traffic deaths, five involving pedestrians.
Stacie Shih, a public information officer with SJPD said San Jose is seeing a troubling increase in San Jose this year. "Especially in the recent weeks," Shih said. She said at least three of the fatalities this year were caused by impaired drivers.
"This is something that the San Jose Police Department has been taking seriously," Shih said.
Casandra Solis works at her family's ice cream shop in the area. Cars speed past her. "You can hear it. Especially on that side. I have seen several car accidents in this intersection. I am not sure why. I am very careful and I always look around," she said.
While police haven't been able to pinpoint the reason for the increase in crashes, they are saying officers have been increasing enforcement on the roads and going to schools, educating students about drunk driving.
