Dolly Parton's library program expands to San Francisco: free books if you're under 5

Dolly Parton's mission to get free books in the hands of kids around the world is expanding in the Bay Area. Children can sign up for her free Imagination Library, which provides kids in San Francisco, under the age of five, with a free book mailed directly to their home every month.

A father walking with his son was stabbed to death outside Commodore Sloat Elementary School, the San Francisco mayor and police said on Friday, and a suspect was arrested within 48 hours.

Tonight through Friday, the upper level low that enables showers to the north and east of the Bay Area will diminish and move off to the east, with a ridge setting up behind the low pressure system. This will shut off our rain chances for the rest of the week and contribute to warming temperatures and drier humidity's. Highs in the inland valleys will rise to the mid and upper 80s and up to near 90 in the warmest locations. The rest of the region remains relatively stable. A late summer heat wave begins Sunday through Thursday with the hottest day on Tuesday. Expect near 80 at the coast and 100 inland.

Rally in San Francisco calls on Newsom to keep his word to fund public transit

More than 100 people attended a hastily-called rally in support of mass transit on Monday. The aim was to urge the governor to make good on a critical loan that transit agencies say they need to continue serving riders.

Transit advocates held a rally Monday in order to persuade California to "deliver on its commitment" to provide emergency loan funding to prevent cuts to public transportation.
