SFFD, animal control rescues heron tangled in tree by fishing line
SAN FRANCISCO - One heron has some new heroes after being rescued when it became tangled in a fishing line Saturday afternoon.
San Francisco Animal Care & Control and the San Francisco Fire Department rescued the young heron from a tree by Fisherman's Wharf, in front of a crowd, after learning that the bird had a hook in its beak while tangled.
An animal control officer in training scaled the SFFD's ladder to reach the bird, an action that was met with applause from the crowd of spectators gathered below.
The heron was taken to a vet to have the fishing hook removed from its beak and is expected to be returned to the wild.
What we don't know:
It's unclear how the heron got the hook caught in its beak and how it got tangled in the fishing line while in a tree. It's also unclear how long the bird will remain in the care of vets before being released back in the wild.
