Calmer winds aid California firefighters but hot Labor Day weekend looms

There is some optimism and progress as winds eased on the fire’s western flank while in the northeast, despite gusty ridgetop winds, firefighters with bulldozers and shovels were steadily hacking out fire lines or burning away vegetation to box in the flames before they reached Tahoe.

The Caldor fire in the Lake Tahoe Sierras is less than 10 miles from the Tahoe Basin. Residents near the town of Myers have been given evacuation warnings. Brush fire in Lucas Valley mostly contained

Forward progress has been stopped at a brush fire in Marin County on Wednesday. The Lassen Fire prompted authorities to order evacuations in Lucas Valley. Those orders have since been lifted.
