Bay Area firefighters went to help rescue a horse and pony stuck in the mud for 18 hours in Monterey County.

A photo from the California Highway Patrol shows that the highway near the Big Creek Bridge is now gone. The road continues to erode as debris and water continue to flow down off the Big Sur mountains.

PG&E confirmed that one of the utility's employees was involved in an accident where the road gave way and that person is safe. 

The storm struck the entire Bay Area and beyond. But it seemed to let most of its anger out on Monterey County.

Several feet of snow have fallen around Lake Tahoe and other parts of the Sierra Nevada range in what has turned into one of the biggest storms in years.

Rain could cause flooding and snow is possible in the mountains.

More than a foot of snow was reported early Wednesday in the foothills north of Reno. The Mount Rose ski resort on the southwest edge of town announced it would be closed "due to blizzard conditions and high winds."

Bay Area water agencies, starved for snow and rain, are encouraged by this week's storm system.

Despite all the worry, there was no major damage, other than a few trees coming down and disruptions to people's lives because the power went out. 

Electrical service is out for some 27,000 customers around the Bay Area as of 5 a.m. Wednesday, as fierce winds and rain batter the region, PG&E reported. 

A Sig Alert was issued and the connector ramp was closed, and there was no immediate word on when the road will reopen.

City workers spent most of Tuesday evening going to door to door, alerting hundreds of residents living near the Guadalupe River of potential flooding.

The North Bay is bracing for the worst as heavy wind and rain, brought on by an atmospheric river winter storm, sweep through the area Tuesday evening.
